Ruby-throated Hummingbird

This piece has been selected to be taught at the Embroiders’ Guild of America Pike’s Peak Chapter in Colorado Springs, CO.

The inspiration for this male ruby-throated hummingbird comes from a photograph of the bird in flight.  The flowers and leaves were inspired from a lamp with leaves and hummingbirds flying around them.  There is no inspiration photo of that lamp and the flowers and leaves were recreated from memory.

This silk shaded piece is on green shantung silk stitched using split backstitch, running stitch and random long and short stitch.  There are 29 colors of DMC cotton flossed used to develop the silk shading.

This piece is a series of “Hummingbirds of the World” that will be offered in the future as teaching pieces for those many stitchers who love hummingbirds.
